Tell us about your education, age and where do you live?
Zephy A Komandur (5)Zephy: I am a first year student in college and I am doing my Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. I am 19 years old. I live in India.

Why do you sketch?
Zephy: It has always been my passion.

At what age did you start drawing?
Zephy: Ever since I was a little child, about 5 years.

Where do you find your inspiration and ideas?
Zephy: Most of my art work revolved around stress at school but now I ask other people for requests and also, I love to sketch my childhood cartoons, animals and favorite movies.

What is your favourite subject and why when making a sketch?
Zephy: Cartoons because I’ve always loved them.

Is drawing people a challenge? How did you learn to draw figures?
Zephy: Yes it is. I watched many videos and have also read many books.

Have you yet sketching in public?
Zephy: No, I have not sketched in public and have yet to do so.

Can you describe your process of creating a sketch?
Zephy: I first draw the outline with a light pencil, preferably a 3H/4H. Then I give it a basic shade, then add in the second layer with more contrast and finally add in the final details.

Zephy: Almost all my sketches are from photos.

Does sketching tie in with your other work? If so how?
Zephy: No, it doesn’t as I’m studying Photography at the moment.

Do you have a favourite sketching medium?
Zephy: No, I like to work with anything I can get my hands on.

Do you like to be a Police Sketch Artists?
Zephy: I haven’t really reached that level yet, but sure, why not.

How did you get started in cartooning sketch?
Zephy: When I was in 2nd grade, I sketched a picture of the lion king and my friends and teachers liked it a lot, thus boosting my confidence in the process.

What do you hope to achieve with your work?
Zephy: I hope to become one of the best artists there is and I hope that my work becomes and inspiration to other artists.

What cartoonist has inspired you the most?
Zephy: Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack as the animation, plot, beautiful sceneries and musics are all just amazing in the series.

What equipment and materials do you use?
Zephy: I use A4 sheets mostly, and Graphite Shading pencils, Sketch pens, Markers, Pastels , ink pens and Ball point pens.

Where do your ideas for cartoons come from?
Zephy: I just draw the cartoons that are really famous or the ones I loved watching as a kid.

What’s your favorite part of being a cartoonist?
Zephy: I just love cartoons and when I draw the old ones, it’s like taking everyone else back into the past and reminiscing the cartoons that they once loved.

What impact has technology had on your work?
Zephy: A huge impact. Without the advancement of the internet, I wouldn’t have been able to watch the hundreds of tutorial videos and also would not have been able to get the pictures of most of my work from the world wide web. Also, my work wouldn’t have been recognized without it being spread over the social network.

Are other members of your family creative?
Zephy: Yes. All of them.

Do you listen to music or watch movies when you are working?
Zephy: I listen to music.

How do you think you’ve grown and changed both as an artist and person?

How you feel giving a Pakistani website interview?
Zephy: I feel happy and thrilled.

Zephy: I am deeply flattered and it is a true honor for me. Maria Manzoor is simply amazing. She has always been very patient and has always encouraged me about my art. I am truly glad that I had the privilege of getting to know her.
